Fredericton Swimmers Excel at World Masters Championships

Three members of the UNB Masters Swim Club traveled to Montreal to participate in the 15th FINA World Masters Championship, which drew 9000 athletes from more than 100 countries to Montreal to compete in various aquatic events. Each swimmer had to qualify for their individual events to a maximum of 5 individual events plus the 3 km Open Water. UNB Masters swimmers included Joseph Culp (60-64 age group ), Juanita Prebble (65-69 age group) and Phyllis Goodlad (85-89 age group).

Results:

Joseph Culp:  Finished with four medals including 8th in the 200m back and 400m individual medley, 9th in 100m backstroke and 10th in 50m backstroke. He was 17th in the 800m freestyle.

Juanita Prebble: Finished with one medal finishing 7th in the 100 butterfly; 12th in the 50 fly; 17th in the 100 free;  22nd in the 800 and 200 free.

Phyllis Goodlad: Finished with 6 medals: Gold in the 3km Open Water Swim; 3 Silver in the 800, 400 and 50 freestyle; one Bronze in the 200 free and a 5th in the 100 free.

The FINA Masters will be combined with the FINA worlds starting next year, when both events will be held in Kazan, Russia.
