Swimming New Brunswick and COVID-19
SNB has a duty of care to all those involved in swimming in NB, so the health, safety, and well-being of New Brunswick swimmers, coaches, officials, and staff remain the top priorities of our mission. In this regard, we invite all our members to read this important message:
As everyone knows, our daily lives and routines have been changed in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. SNB has no expertise about COVID-19, but we do want to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our swimmers, coaches, families and other members of our community.
Basic personal hygiene and social distancing
We remind you all that best measures to avoid infection are basic personal hygiene and minimizing your contact with other people – what we now call “social distancing.”
Self-quarantine
We remind you that anyone who has symptoms of COVID-19 should contact telephone 8-1-1 and place themselves in self-quarantine. Anyone who has travelled overseas (including the SNB President) should be in self-quarantine for 14 days after their return.
Stay informed
Reliable information is available on the New Brunswick and Canadian government website and from major media networks.
Swim Training
Most community pools have been closed and we understand that all clubs have cancelled regular training programs.
Competitions
Swimming Canada and SNB have cancelled all competitions and other sanctioned events until 30 April 20, including the Easterns and the National Trials. Decisions about later events will depend upon how the pandemic evolves. SNB is prepping possible calendar for resuming competitions in May, although we realized that swimmers will not be at their peak performance.
Keeping occupied during the pandemic
Training
We encourage coaches to suggest dry-land exercises that swimmers can do at home to keep fit – both mentally and physically. Swimmers can stay in touch with their club mates through social media. Why not share some ideas or videos of what swimmers can do without a pool?
Planning
We are preparing calendar options so that we can all get back in the pool as soon as possible. We are also going ahead with planning for 2020-21 and for the next AGM in Bathurst on 24-25 October.
Education
If coaches are not at the pool, we hope they have time to catch up on some paperwork. We hope to use this pause to work on your professional development score (PD). Please check the coach NB page for more information about resources & webinars which will allow you to get required PD points at home.
Please let SNB know in the unlikely event that a member of your club has COVID-19.
