Great performances from MTA and the URED at AUS Championships

Both Teams had outstanding performances, making multiple finals, winning medals, and setting records.

New Brunswick Varsity athletes had 3 U-Sports qualifying times coming out of the AUS Champs:

1.        Sebastian Cariaga: MTA qualified in 200 back (gold - provincial record) (2:01.61)

2.        Blake Kingston: UREDS qualified in 100 breast (1:01.75) and 200 breast (2:16.21)

3.        Jordan Thomas: MTA qualified in 100 breast (bronze) (1:11.78) and 200 breast (silver) (2:34.66)

Provincial Record Breakers:

Sebastian Cariaga MTA:

  • 100 back 56.31, Halifax

  • 200 back 2:01.61, Halifax

Blake Kingston UNB:

  • 50 breast 28.48, Halifax

  • 100 breast 1:01.75, Halifax

MTA’s Jordan Thomas won Silver in the 50 Breast and Bronze in the 200 IM, setting new team records in all 3 Breaststroke events.

Sebastian Cariaga 200 back time also sets a new Mount Allison Team record, and a Bolivian National record. Sebastian also took the Gold in the 100 Backstroke, setting another provincial record in a time of 56.31 – and rounded up his medal haul with a Silver in the 50 Back.

MTA’s Makayla Churchill took Bronze in the Women’s 50m Backstroke, while Allison Gauthier took the Bronze in the 100 Backstroke.

Several new MTA team records were set:

·      Ian Steinwall Pennington 50 Breaststroke

·      Jordan Thomas 50, 100 & 200 Breaststroke

·      Sebastian Cariaga 50, 100 & 200 Backstroke

·      Women’s 4 x 100 Medley Relay (Allison Gauthier, Jordan Thomas, Julianne Levesque & Makayla Churchill) 

URED’s Jessie Collett kicked off the Friday finals session with a thrilling second-place finish, starting from lane 1. Élodie Martin not only won the 50 freestyle but also took second place in the 100 freestyle. We also had one of their rookies, Maxime Kenny, place third in the 100 backstroke.

In addition, URED’s Blake Kingston, who won the gold in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and second in the 50 breaststroke. Blake also made AUS history with a record-setting time of 1:01.75 in the 100 breaststroke. 

The RED’s relays also showed some love to the podium with the Women’s 4x100 Free and 4x200 Free, as well as the men’s 4x100 Medley relay, all coming in third place. Last but not least, Emma Sinclair not only achieved victory in the 200 fly from behind but was also awarded the title of AUS Rookie of the Year and Rookie of the Meet.
